History of Historical Society

The Hardin County Historical Society held its first meeting on November 30, 1970 in the basement of the First National Bank in Eldora, Iowa. The first General meeting took place on Dec. 14, 1970 at the IA Electric Light and Power Co., also in Eldora. There were 128 Charter Members. Numerous items were beginning to be donated with no place for them to call "home"

On November 27th, 1972 the Board of Directors were notified of a Victorian Home available for purchase, and possession of the home was given in December 1972.  This home was built in 1891 and thought to be an ideal place for the Society's collection of artifacts.

The present Hardin County Historical Library was purchased in 2013 as a result of a hail storm that swept through the City of Eldora in 2009. Society members preserve records from the county and state for patrons use.

The Board of Directors hold meetings on the second Monday of each month beginning at 1:30pm. They meet from May through September at the Historical House and October through April at the Historical Library.

The General Membership Annual Meeting is held on the last Saturday of June with the time set previous to that date.
